Arguably the most important piece of cycling kit are shorts, so what do you need to know about getting the best pair?

What types of women’s cycling shoes are there?

There are various types of cycling shoes depending on your planned area of use, but whether you’re looking for women’s mountain bike shoes or road cycling shoes, you’re sure to find your ideal pair at Canyon. The key to comfortable shoes is the perfect fit. But there are other performance features that should be considered too, for example the sole should be tailored to the area of use. Women’s MTB shoes need a well-cushioned sole with good tread that offers plenty of grip when mountain biking off-road. In the case of women’s road cycling shoes, on the other hand, the sole needs to be particularly stiff so that your pedal power can be converted into forward propulsion as fully and efficiently as possible.

What factors influence the use of women’s cycling shoes?

The type of cycling shoes you wear also depends on the weather. In winter and the shoulder seasons, cycling shoes should be well-lined and waterproof. In summer, the key lies in having a light, breathable upper and good ventilation. As you can already see, there’s no such thing as the perfect women’s cycling shoe.

Which pedal system is recommended: clipless or flat pedals?

To clip or not to clip – that is the question… There’s no doubt that women’s cycling shoes with a clipless system, such as Shimano’s SPD system, have plenty of benefits: you’re optimally connected to the bike and can transform every pedal stroke into forward propulsion with the utmost efficiency. If needs be, you can simply unclip your ‘clip-ins’ from the pedals. SPD women’s cycling shoes make as much sense for road bikes as for mountain bikes. However, there are some areas where many female cyclists prefer non-clipless shoes. When in technical terrain or largely riding for fun, many female cyclists swear by flat pedal shoes with a good tread.
