There’s no doubt in our minds: Kasia Niewiadoma is the most exciting rider in the pro peloton. CANYON//SRAM Racing’s Polish superstar has an insatiable attacking instinct, one that has led her to beautiful victories – and a few near misses. One thing’s for certain, win or lose, it’s never boring when Kasia’s racing.

Behind the athlete

The expectation of others is one of the curses of being a pro athlete.
Kasia Niewiadoma has spent a decade lighting up the UCI Women’s WorldTour with her explosive, exciting riding. But for some, that’s not enough. They think she should win more. Attack less. Be more patient. But to judge her like that is to misunderstand the essence of what makes the 29-year-old such an extraordinary bike rider.
When she won La Flèche Wallonne in April 2024, her first victory on the road since 2019, nothing changed for the Pole:
“I hadn't been allowing anyone to make me feel like I should be chasing that victory. Sure, it was a long time between road wins, but for me every single year in between I was taking personal victories that made me truly happy. A podium overall at the Tour de France Femmes in 2023. The Gravel World Championships. Every year there was something that kept me motivated and pushing harder. So honestly, the victory happened, but I didn’t feel like I’d been missing it.”

How do you solve a problem like Demi?

In some ways, Niewiadoma has been unfortunate to race throughout her career against a series of indomitable Dutchwomen. First was Anna van der Breggen (who’s coming back in 2025), then Annemiek van Vleuten, and now Demi Vollering.
At each step, Kasia has been racing at their shoulders, or chasing their tyre tracks. To be consistently so close and yet also so far, must be hard to accept. But Kasia just keeps on keeping on, and she made a big breakthrough in 2023.
“The main turning point for me was at the Gravel Worlds, because that’s when I first dropped Demi Vollering and rode away from her to the win. To be able to do that when we were just one on one has allowed me to flick a switch mentally and think, yes I can do that. She’s extremely strong, and I think that, mentally, sometimes we let her go without trying hard enough to challenge her. But now I know I can do it.”

Speed dreams

By far one of the most stylish, and technically gifted riders in the peloton, certain elements of speed come naturally to Niewiadoma:
“When I think of speed I think of descending,” she says. “I think of choosing perfect lines and not losing speed by braking in the wrong moments. That’s what I love most about the Aeroad. It always feels very comfortable descending.”
She recognises that there are plenty of advantages to be had in being so at one with her bike:
“When there is a hard stage with plenty of descending, if you can use that moment for recovery and let your muscles recover you can gain a lot of speed while going up the next climb. I see a lot of my competitors struggling with their ‘flow’ while descending. They tense up and don't recover for the next climbs. If you’re at one with your bike, and it dances with you, you have a real advantage.”
One such upcoming race where the CANYON//SRAM Racing rider could use her descending skills to recover is the final stage of this year’s Tour de France Femmes. The peloton will race up the Col du Glandon before swooping down and tackling the mythical Alpe d’Huez.
It will be a sensational finale to the race, and Niewiadoma has her speed dream firmly set on the mountain: “I want to win up Alpe d’Huez. I want my name written on one of the hairpins on the climbs.”
